Frequently Asked Questions
Travel Vaccinations
What do these immunisations protect me from?
The Travel Clinic provides you with protection from a number of diseases that are widespread in the destination of your choice. The Immunisation Schedule provides information on the disease, the vaccination and how often immunisation is required and the duration of immunity.
What countries DON'T I need immunisation for?
Immunisation is NOT required if you are travelling to the United States, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.
However, your Tetanus, Poliomyelitis and childhood immunisations should be up to date and valid travel insurance is essential protection. If you are travelling to any European Community countries you are well advised to carry an EHIC form obtained from most post offices or online. This will allow you to receive free medical treatment in EC countries.
What countries DO I need immunisation for?
Certain areas of the world have poliomyelitis epidemics periodically. If you are travelling to such countries you should have a booster dose of oral Poliomyelitis. BCG immunisation, three months before travel, is recommended if you are staying for longer periods in Asia, Africa, Central and South America and the Far East.
When should I be immunised?
Immunisation should be three months before travel. Most travel vaccines should be completed four to six weeks before the date of travel. PLEASE NOTE, however, that even if your travel plans are last minute, you should be immunised before travel.
What if I am on regular medication?
Please contact the surgery and we can arrange a repeat prescription for the medicines you need.
